Although Ghana is one of the more economically and politically stable countries in Africa, there is still a high rate of unemployment, especially among young people at the age of entering the workforce. This is a particularly serious phenomenon in Ghana's rural areas, and is causing young people to migrate to urban areas, where gentrification and extreme rents pose a new challenge. One approach to this problem is job creation. Especially in the rural areas, agriculture offers itself as a promising and more sustainable sector. After closely examining this sector, we came across the NGO Extramile, which many years ago helped an entire region become the most important honey-producing region in Ghana through beekeeping. The NGO, together with the traditional head of the Nkwanta region, Nana David, in eastern Ghana, has helped young people gain access to beekeeping through professional training. Over the years, the initiative has slowly grown and now represents a cooperative of beekeepers and employees with 3000 hives. Many families in the region now keep one to five hives and are able to earn a small income. We have taken up this sustainable model and are now organizing beekeeping training together with our partner, the Amediewu Honey Foundation, in a region that is particularly affected by high unemployment among young people.
